Synopsis
My dramatic screenplay entitled “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” is loosely based on the Charlie Daniels song of the same name.

The story centers on the devil, down in Georgia stealing the souls of the wicked. At the same time, a seventeen year old boy named Jeremiah Brayden, a child of divorce and perceived parental neglect starts associating with two older boys in a desperate attempt for acceptance he feels he is not receiving from his parents.

Victor and Caroline Brayden divorced after the accidental death of their daughter Deborah.  While bathing Deborah in the sink, Caroline briefly turns her attention away from Deborah, who falls out of the sink, cracking her head on the floor below.  Victor responds to Caroline’s blood-curdling screams and arrives to see her cradling their daughter in her arms.

The details surrounding Deborah’s death put a strain on their marriage, which they try to reconcile by having Jeremiah.  The reconciliation fails. Victor can no longer bear the sight of Caroline and almost completely drops out of Jeremiah’s life.  He is unable to see that both of his parents do love him, despite them being consumed with grief and animosity.

The two older boys, Charlie, 21, the leader and Eric, 19, a follower are criminals who wreck havoc in Atlanta. Jeremiah, 17, an impressionable teenager has joined them in their criminal activity that starts with robbery and leads to home invasion.

During one home invasion, the residents, a father and daughter cut their vacation short and return home early, encountering Charlie, Eric and Jeremiah who believe they will be out of town for days.  Tension arises as the parties are confronted.  The father’s botched attempt at heroism leads to a struggle between him and Jeremiah, the gun between them goes off, killing the father.  Charlie kills Eric because of his perceived lack of respect and then murders the daughter in front of a horrified Jeremiah, who manages to escape being killed by Charlie.  The devil claims Charlie’s soul.

While rushing home to his mother, Jeremiah is confronted by the devil, he plunges his hand in to Jeremiah’s gut and rips out his soul, throwing it in to hell. An angel rescues Jeremiah’s soul before the demons get it.  The angel throws Jeremiah’s soul back in to his body and flies to the sky.  The devil pursues with a vengeance.  This leads to a spectacular chase scene, filled with iconic imagery, an astonishing revelation about the angel’s identity, a touch of heaven, followed by the search for Jeremiah’s savior, amidst the devilish chaos that has consumed the state of Georgia.

The story ends with the ultimate sacrifice, a brilliant resurrection, along with faith, redemption and closure.
